Why do cats purr?

Cats purr for a variety of reasons beyond just contentment. While purring often signifies that a cat is happy and relaxed, it can also be a way for cats to communicate other emotions and physical states. For example, cats may purr when they are frightened or feeling threatened as a way to soothe themselves. Purring can also be a sign of pain or discomfort; some studies suggest that the frequency of a cat's purrs may have a healing effect on their bones and tissues. Additionally, mother cats purr to communicate with their newborn kittens, who are born blind and deaf but can feel the vibrations of their mother's purrs, helping to guide and comfort them.
